Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and raised in nearby Kutztown, where he learned cartooning from his father and from Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney. After two semesters at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh and a 1978 solo show at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center, he moved to New York and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts. In New York he joined the alternative art scene of the downtown streets, subways and clubs, befriending Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat and exhibiting at Club 57. Inspired by Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky, William Burroughs, Christo and Andy Warhol, he committed to a truly public art built on the primacy of the line. From 1980 to 1985 he drew hundreds of white chalk drawings on blank advertising panels in the subway, sometimes forty in a day. His first New York solo show was at the Westbeth Painters Space in 1981, followed in 1982 by an acclaimed debut at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, and he showed at Documenta 7, the São Paulo Biennial and the Whitney Biennial. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in Soho to make his work widely affordable. He created more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, many for charities, hospitals and children's centers, including the Crack is Wack mural on New York's FDR Drive and a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he established the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989 to support AIDS organizations and children's programs. He collaborated with Madonna, Grace Jones, Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol, among others, and his work appeared in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions. Haring died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990, at age 31. His work is held in major museum collections around the world.
